International Maritime Organization
Since 1959, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has served as the United Nation's specialized agency devoted to maritime affairs. The IMO is responsible for the safety and security of shipping as well as the prevention of pollution (marine and atmospheric) by ships. One of its key duties is to devise strategies and measures to ensure that all waterways stay clean. Thus, it encourages cooperation between governments in the regulation of shipping engaged in international trade and promotes the highest practicable standards concerning maritime safety, efficiency of navigation, and prevention/control of marine pollution.
